MOSCOW, 2 February (BelTA) – Suburban direct rail services between Smolensk, Orsha, and Vitebsk are set to be launched in April, Russian Transport Minister Andrei Nikitin told journalists following the meeting of the Union State Council of Ministers in Moscow on 2 February, BelTA has learned.
“The first two routes will be Smolensk-Orsha and Smolensk-Vitebsk. Later we plan to add such routes as Velikiye Luki-Vitebsk, Velikiye Luki-Polotsk, and Bryansk-Gomel. We expect the first two routes to begin operations in April,” he said.
Andrei Nikitin clarified that the services will operate daily, with the same benefits as those offered on suburban rail transport in Belarus and Russia.
The minister also added that these routes are planned to be served by modern Russian trains: Lastochka or Finist.
The Union State Council of Ministers meeting adopted a resolution on the preparation of draft documents for launching cross-border suburban passenger rail services of the Union State.
