Harvesting of buckwheat, millet nearing completion in Belarus

MINSK, 6 October (BelTA) – The harvesting of buckwheat and millet is on the homestretch in Belarus, BelTA learned from the updates posted by the Agriculture and Food Ministry.

As of 6 October, buckwheat was harvested on the area of 23,800 hectares (95.3% of the plan). The average yield was 12.8 centners per hectare; 30,500 tonnes was threshed. As for millet, 95.4% of the area under this crop was harvested (7,150 hectares); 15,900 tonnes was threshed; the average yield was 22.2 centners per hectare. Spring rapeseed was harvested on 99.6% of the area (36,200 hectares). All in all, 827,900 tonnes of rapeseed (including winter rapeseed) was threshed with the average yield at 14.7 centners per hectare.

A total of 671,000 hectares of the area under maize was harvested in Belarus, which is 55.1% of the plan. Belarus harvested 649,600 hectares of maize for silage and fodder (64.6% of the plan) and gathered 15.652 million tonnes of grass feed with the yield at 241 centners per hectare. Harvesting of maize for grain is underway and is 10.05% complete: 21,500 hectares were harvested, with 130,700 tonnes threshed.

Belarusian agricultural workers threshed 8.186 million tonnes of grain. The average yield was 37 centners per hectare (in 2019, the yield as of the same date was 32.3 centners per hectare). Minsk Oblast harvested 2 million tonnes of grain, Grodno Oblast cropped more than 1.5 million tonnes, Brest Oblast over 1.3 million tonnes, Mogilev Oblast over 1.1 million tonnes, Vitebsk Oblast more than 1 million tonnes, Gomel Oblast over 900,000 tonnes.

In addition, some 859,400 tonnes of hay (85.1% of the plan), 13.323 million tonnes of haylage (105.7%) and 13.455 tonnes of silage (70.2%) was stocked. Plans are in place to procure 9.3 million tonnes of fodder units of grass feed, most of them in Minsk Oblast and Brest Oblast. By this time, 83.8% of the plan has been fulfilled.
