Eurasian integration seen as key factor of economic development in EAEU

MINSK, 29 May (BelTA) - Eurasian integration is a significant factor of economic development for all EAEU member countries, MP of the House of Representatives Aleksandr Shpakovsky told BelTA.

“Belarus is one of the founders of the Eurasian Economic Union. The very idea of integration in this format belongs to the first president of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. It should be noted that Aleksandr Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin have made a significant contribution to the development of the idea of Eurasian integration,” said Aleksandr Shpakovsky. “As for the main idea behind the Eurasian Economic Union, the very name of the integration bloc already emphasizes economy. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the success and strength of the EAEU taking into account specific economic parameters. If we talk about the 11 years of the Eurasian Economic Union's existence, we can note that today the trade within the EAEU has more than doubled and is approaching $100 billion.”

Since the launch of the Eurasian Economic Union, its total GDP has grown by 18% to $2.5 trillion. “One extremely important point which contributes to the development of the economy and mutual trade is the fact that we have been recently moving at an accelerated pace to mutual settlements in national currencies. Today, more than 90% of mutual settlements are made in national currencies. Therefore, we can say that the very idea of the Eurasian Economic Union was absolutely logical, Eurasian integration is a significant factor of economic development for all member states, including the Republic of Belarus,” the MP said.

“Eurasian integration is on the move. Our country has its own ideas on further development of Eurasian integration. First of all, of course, it is necessary to continue the construction of a common economic space. Any economic union is built around 4 freedoms, i.e. free movement of people, goods, services, and capital. Unfortunately, the goal of a common market, including a common energy market, has not been fully achieved yet. This is a key task to be solved in the coming years. Therefore, there is a lot to strive for, and Belarus, within the framework of its presidency, will certainly continue the course of accelerated Eurasian economic integration,” said Aleksandr Shpakovsky.
“Our country is interested in this; we have an export-oriented economy. In this regard, the common economic space for Belarus is an unambiguous benefit. We are confident that for the other participants of the Eurasian integration this kind of movement will be the absolutely right one. Therefore, we will continue the development of the Eurasian Economic Union.”
