MINSK, 28 September (BelTA) – Electricity consumption in Belarus has increased by 6 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) over five years. Belarusian Energy Minister Denis Moroz made the relevant statement on the air of the TV channel Belarus One, BelTA has learned.
Denis Moroz said: “Energy industry professionals are contemplating the construction of the second nuclear power plant or possibly the third unit [of the existing nuclear power plant] in Belarus as a way to primarily increase the energy security of our country. Over the past five years alone the volume of electricity consumption in the country has increased by 6 billion kWh. It is a very large figure. And we expect these trends to continue.”
The minister noted that in order to satisfy the economy’s demand for electricity, it is necessary to develop power-generating capacities in a timely manner. “One of the serious directions in this field is the development of nuclear-powered electricity generation. It is a reliable and safe source of energy for many generations to come,” the official stated.
