BelGee launches production of electric cars

MINSK, 20 May (BelTA) – The Belarusian car manufacturer BelGee has started the production of electric cars, BelGee Director General Gennady Svidersky told the media on the sidelines of the second business conference “Industrial Complex of Belarus: Export, Import Independence, Effective Management” in Minsk on 20 May, BelTA has learned.

According to Gennady Svidersky, BelGee has launched the production of a new model Geely EX5, which is already available in showrooms. The official presentation of the electric car for the Belarusian market will take place soon. “We have opened pre-orders for this model, and those who will place them before 23 May will get an additional discount of Br1,000,” he said.

The EX5 is an electric crossover which has not been produced in Belarus before. “We imported ready-made cars from China. Last year we presented the E8 car - a premium-class sedan. EX5 is the first model that has already been assembled at the factory, which means it has a Belarusian VIN-code. We have programs for its large-scale assembly. Thanks to this model, we can say that the BelGee factory starts production of electric cars,” said Gennady Svidersky.

The new crossover is very similar to the petrol-powered Atlas, but incorporates  all technical innovations of an electric car – a driver's assistance system, navigation, all applications are in Russian. Compact crossover Geely EX5 is equipped with a 218hp electric engine. The Geely EX5 boasts a 430km range on a full charge. “We hope our consumers will like it,” he said. The factory is also considering the production of hybrid and budget electric models.

Speaking about volumes and localization, Gennady Svidersky stressed that everything depended on demand. “Depending on the production volume, we will make decisions on mass production of these cars. We plan to produce cars that can be sold not only on the Belarusian market, but also supplied to Russia. Therefore, we call on the government to harmonize the requirements for electric cars in Belarus and Russia to have them unified in our Union State,” the director added.
