MINSK, 10 December (BelTA) – The House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus has ratified an agreement on trademarks, service marks, and protected designations of origin of products of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), BelTA has learned.
According to Tatiana Avtukhova, a member of the Education, Culture, and Science Commission of the lower chamber of the parliament, the agreement will enable EAEU member states to submit one application to the national patent agency of any EAEU country.
The National Center of Intellectual Property is such an agency in Belarus. The ratification of the agreement will reduce the cost of submitting an application because only one application will have to be filed instead of one application in every patent agency of the EAEU member states. The agreement also simplifies and accelerates the procedure of legal protection of trademarks. The agreement also clearly stipulates how the national patent agencies will have to interact with each other.
Tatiana Avtukhova is convinced that the creation of such a regional system is an attractive tool for individualizing the products that can sell well in the Eurasian Economic Union.
Addressing the MPs in the Oval Hall, Chairman of the State Science and Standardization Committee Aleksandr Shumilin noted that the agreement is aimed at regulating relations arising from the registration, legal protection, and use of trademarks and designations of origin of EAEU products.
The agreement's ratification will simplify and expedite the acquisition of legal protection of trademarks and designations of origin of goods. The procedure will be in effect in all the EAEU member states at once. It will reduce costs for applicants and copyright holders. It will enable free and protected movement of products and services on the market of the Eurasian Economic Union for Belarusian manufacturers among other parties.
