Belarusian economy minister explains lingering trade barriers in EAEU

ST. PETERSBURG, 26 December (BelTA) – Countries of the Eurasian Economic Union should walk towards each other in their efforts to lift barriers, BelTA learned from Belarusian Economy Minister Yuri Chebotar on the sidelines of a session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Leningrad Oblast, Russia.

According to the minister, the removal of barriers on the EAEU market is always added to the agenda of sessions. Participants of summits discuss work with the already detected restrictions and what can be done to prevent the emergence of new barriers.

“But the economy is a living and breathing organism. Certain external factors and issues with the operation of individual economy branches appear all the time. And naturally, the states implement some measures that may not be entirely satisfying for colleagues in the union. In this regard the Eurasian Economic Union venue is primarily a venue for negotiations and a mediation mechanism. Prior to detecting barriers, the parties organize consultations in order to negate consequences of these barriers as much as possible,” Yuri Chebotar said.

The minister suggested taking a look at mutual trade turnover. “If we see growth in some areas, then the countries should move towards each other. This is why the agenda is active, there are constant consultations between experts and between members of the [Eurasian Economic] Commission,” the official added.

In his words, mutual trade between Eurasian Economic Union member states has doubled in the ten years since the union was created. “There are accomplishments. It is simply necessary to set even more ambitious tasks,” the economy minister stated.
