MINSK, 4 September (BelTA) – Belarus and Uganda plan to cooperate in agriculture and raw material supplies, BelTA learned from the Belarusian State Food Industry Concern Belgospishcheprom.

An official delegation from Uganda’s Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Ministry headed by State Minister for Animal Industry Bright Kanyontore Rwamirama visited Belgospishcheprom.

Chairman of the concern Oleg Zhidkov welcomed the minister and other members of the delegation and gave an account of the concern’s enterprises and their products. He mentioned that the company is looking for cocoa bean suppliers for Belarus in order to provide raw materials for the country's largest confectionery manufacturers, Spartak and Kommunarka. Oleg Zhidkov expressed interest in sourcing raw materials for Belarus’ tobacco industry and fruit purée for canning enterprises.

Bright Kanyontore Rwamirama noted that agriculture is the backbone of Uganda’s economy, providing employment for 70% of the population. The main crops are coffee (the country’s primary export), tea, cocoa beans, and fruit. He pointed out that in the past they had to work through European intermediaries, but now there is an opportunity to sign contracts directly to establish long‑term cooperation.

He also mentioned that the day before he had tasted confectionery from the Spartak factory and gave high praise to its flavor.

The parties discussed the possibility of organizing a visit by a Belarusian delegation to Uganda for detailed negotiations with agricultural producers and to explore opportunities for obtaining raw material samples.
