Belarus-Iran rail freight transport grows 6 times over five years

MINSK, 9 April (BelTA) – Over the past five years, rail freight transport between Belarus and Iran has increased sixfold, BelTA learned from the press center of Belarusian Railways.

Director of the Belarusian Railways Valery Verenich held negotiations with Dr Jabbar Ali Zakeri, Deputy Minister for Roads and Urban Development, Chair of the Board and President of the Railways of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The parties discussed cooperation between the organizations within international platforms and integration associations. They also outlined future plans for the development of Belarusian foreign trade freight transport to Iran and other countries using the infrastructure of the international North-South transport corridor.

Valery Verenich stressed that rail freight transport between Belarus and Iran has long become regular and gaining momentum. In 2019, the rail freight transport between the two countries amounted to about 20,000 tonnes, while in January-March 2025, it exceeded 34,000 tonnes. Over five years, the rail freight volume has increased sixfold.

Following the negotiations, the parties signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation. The document reflects the aspirations of Belarusian and Iranian railways to reach a new level of their relations and cooperation and to implement plans to transport Belarusian foreign trade goods both in the bilateral Belarus-Iran traffic and within the North-South transport corridor.
