Belarus, India agree to mutually set up tractor assembly plants

MINSK, 18 September (BelTA) – Belarus and India have agreed on the mutual establishment of tractor assembly plants at a meeting between Second Secretary of the Embassy of India in Minsk Shri Rajesh Kumar and Belarusian businesses at the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BelCCI), the BelCCI press service told BelTA.

The business entities expressed a genuine interest and concrete proposals for promoting cooperation and joint projects, the BelCCI noted. The event was attended by heads and representatives of Belarusian enterprises and organizations of industrial manufacturing, light and food industries, trade, and other sectors.

BelCCI Deputy Chairwoman Yelena Malinovskaya noted that the chamber attaches great importance to the development of trade and economic interaction between Belarus and India. “Cooperation between our countries is advancing. The relations are of a long-standing friendly nature, based on the similarity of views on the world order, ideological principles, and a common assessment of the situation on many issues of the international agenda,” Yelena Malinovskaya emphasized.

Shri Rajesh Kumar spoke about concrete steps in the trade and economic cooperation between Belarus and India that have been taken recently. For instance, interaction has been established between the Minsk Tractor Works (MTZ) and the Indian company Sonalika. The enterprises have agreed on an exchange of parts and technologies and have also expressed intentions to sign a memorandum on the establishment of assembly plants for Indian tractors in Belarus and Belarusian tractors in India. There is another Indian company that wishes to cooperate with BelAZ.

“All this boost trade between India and Belarus by hundreds of millions of dollars,” he said.

The two states are also tackling persistent trade and economic barriers, including strict visa rules, excessive market regulations, and challenges with reciprocal payments. Belarus’ and India’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) offers a platform to solve many of these issues.

The BelCCI is eager to continue providing comprehensive support to Belarusian and Indian businesses across a wide range of areas.
