MINSK, 8 August (BelTA) – Belarus and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have discussed prospects of cooperation in agriculture, the press service of the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry told BelTA.
Belarusian Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Natalya Shevtsova held an online conference with Raimund Jehle, FAO Regional Program Leader and the de facto head of FAO’s office in Belarus. The deputy agriculture and food minister noted that Belarus highly appreciates many years of cooperation with FAO and is open to a dialogue about working out constructive models of interaction in various spheres, including agriculture, environmental protection, social sphere, and education. The official underlined the importance of working together to counteract external challenges and bolster food security across the globe.
During the meeting the parties discussed priority avenues of further interaction, including the realization of a project for developing phytosanitary services in Belarus and the involvement of rural young residents in agrofood systems. Raimund Jehle presented FAO’s structure and explained that it provides technical aid to 17 countries in the region via the office in Budapest.
FAO’s main mission is to raise living standards of the rural population, ensure food security and the rational use of natural resources. In the last ten years as many as 15 international technical aid projects were successfully implemented in Belarus in such areas as the preservation of genetic resources of plants, adaptation to climate change, and the promotion of female entrepreneurship in rural areas.
During the online conference close attention was paid to the attraction and retention of young specialists in rural areas. As a result of the discussion the parties signed a technical aid project designed to support the involvement of rural young people in agrofood systems.
