Belarus’ buckwheat harvest 72% complete

MINSK, 11 September (BelTA) – Belarus has harvested 25,300 hectares (72%) planted with buckwheat, threshing 34,800 tonnes of crop with yields at 13.7 centners per hectare, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry.

As of 11 September, agricultural organizations in 43 regions of the country completed buckwheat harvest. Grodno Oblast showed the best results, with yields at 24.1 centners per hectare in Berestovitsa District and 23.5 centners per hectare in Voronovo District. The farms of Luban District secured yields at 22.1 centners per hectare, those of Lyakhovichi District got yields at 20.6 centners per hectare.

According to the Agriculture and Food Ministry, buckwheat is a strategically important crop in ensuring food security of the country. In 2024, some 5,900 hectares were planted with original and elite seeds, which amounted to 16% of the total area sown with buckwheat, 22,000 hectares, or 60% of the total, were planted with seeds of the 1st and 2nd reproductions.

An estimated 81% (28,800 hectares) of sowing this year is allocated to buckwheat seeds of domestic selection.

In 2024, the area planted with buckwheat amounted to 35,800 hectares. The biggest buckwheat areas are  in Minsk Oblast (21%), Gomel Oblast (19%) and Mogilev Oblast (18%).
