Nearly one-third of Belarus-Ukraine border demarcated

BREST, 6 April (BelTA) – Nearly one-third of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border has been demarcated, Chairman of the State Border Committee of Belarus Leonid Maltsev said during a session of the Brest Oblast state border policy commission held in Brest on 6 April, BelTA has learned.

The demarcation of the border has been conducted in cooperation with Ukrainian partners since June 2014. The work on a 148-kilometer section of the border in Brest Oblast has been completed. As many as 478 border markers have been installed on the external border of Brest District, Malorita District, and Ivanovo District. “The total of 330km of the border has been marked in Brest Oblast and Gomel Oblast using topographic maps. As many as 968 temporary border markers have been placed. The total length of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border is 1,084km,” Leonid Maltsev noted.

The demarcation will be continued in Kobrin District and Drogichin District in 2016. Specialists estimate that the process of demarcation of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border will take more than five years.

Leonid Maltsev pointed out that the State Border Committee has successfully fulfilled the instructions of the Belarusian head of state to organize seasonal passage of Ukrainian citizens to the territory of Belarus. The budget of Stolin District has received an additional Br790 million since the introduction of the entry charges for foreigners to the landscape reserve Olmanskiye Bolota in 2015. “That was our first experience. Besides, the order came into force when the berry picking season was nearing its end. This year we expect to achieve better results,” Leonid Maltsev said.
