Yakubovich: Maidan is not the best means of addressing fateful issues

MINSK, 11 April (BelTA) – Maidan is not the best means of addressing political and other fateful issues, and the history has repeatedly proved it, Editor-in-Chief of the SB. Belarus Segodnya newspaper Pavel Yakubovich said during the Club of Editors program aired on the Belarus 1 TV channel on 10 April, BelTA has learned.

“There are always others means and methods. Maidan in Ukraine, in my opinion, was sincere and wide-scale. This Maidan however, as we see it, has not achieved its goals yet,” Pavel Yakubovich said.

The media expert believes that the referendum held in the Netherlands on the Ukraine-EU association has been negatively affected by the current situation with migrants in Europe.

“It seems the Dutch do not differ much between Ukrainians and those who have flooded the country through Turkey and Greece. The Dutch are calm and thoughtful people, and they should understand that at stake is something more important than just a plebiscite on Ukraine. It is about the European Union, the choice of the Ukrainian people. There are many other serious circumstances. I believe however that the main reason is the fear of migrants. An average Dutch thinks that people from Ukraine will rush into the country, take away jobs and so on,” said Pavel Yakubovich.

According to the preliminary data, at the recent referendum in the Netherlands 38.1% of voters favored the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement. 61.1% voted against it. The turnout made up 32.2%. By law, the referendum is considered valid if the turnout makes up at least 30%. The final official results will be announced on 12 April.
