Poll: About 54% of Belarusians consider president election main event of 2015

MINSK, 28 December (BelTA) - About 54% of Belarusians believe that the president election was the main event of the year 2015, according to the opinion poll conducted by the Information and Analysis Center on 5-15 December BelTA has learned.

“The poll did not imply multiple answers. Therefore the results are even more important: citizens recalled important moments and dates in the life of the country with which they associate this year," the Information and Analysis Center said.

According to the poll, the main event of the year was the election of the President of the Republic of Belarus (54% of the respondents). Other significant events included the negotiations of the Ukraine contact group in Minsk (5%), the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the construction of the nuclear power plant in Ostrovets, and the speech made by the head of state at the UN Summit (2% of respondents for each event). More than a third of respondents (36.5%) found it difficult to name the key event of the outgoing year.

When assessing the changes that took place in Belarus during the year, the majority of the respondents observed that the situation became calmer in 2015 (23%) or remained stable (42%). When speaking about the situation in the world, Belarusians hold a different view: the vast majority (80%) considers that the situation became tenser in 2015.
