Lebedev: Belarus-Russia relations underpin cooperation in CIS

MINSK, 4 February (BelTA) – The interaction between Belarus and Russia within the framework of the Belarus-Russia Union State underpins the cooperation between the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev said after his meeting with Belarusian Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov, BelTA has learned.

“This axis – Russia-Belarus – serves as a kind of a linchpin in the cooperation between the CIS countries,” Sergei Lebedev said.

He added that the interaction between Belarus and Russia in the Eurasian Economic Union is of no less importance. “CIS agencies cooperate closely with the agencies of other regional organizations. We have a memorandum of cooperation. The main thing is to make this cooperation more effective so that it would bring the desired results and help us tackle problems,” Sergei Lebedev added.

“The countries of the Union State maintain an intensive dialogue. The positive practices developed in the Union State are later applied on a larger scale in the CIS,” Sergei Lebedev explained.
