Call for prosecuting OSCE mission assailants in Ukraine

MINSK, 1 June (BelTA) – Those responsible for firing at the OSCE special monitoring mission in Ukraine should be prosecuted, BelTA learned from Martin Sajdik, the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office's special representative in the trilateral contact group on Ukraine, on 1 June.

Martin Sajdik said: “I am particularly concerned about the ceasefire violations that have resulted in military and civilian casualties and about the recent deliberate violations with regard to the unarmed personnel and assets of the OSCE special monitoring mission in Ukraine. I condemn these assaults upon the unarmed civilian observers as well as the OSCE assets and demand justice and prosecution for everyone involved in these transgressions.”

Martin Sajdik confirmed it is necessary to ensure the safe passage of the OSCE special monitoring mission all over Ukraine for the sake of the mission's work. “I would like to underline my understanding of the fact that any restrictions on the freedom of movement of the special monitoring mission violate the mission's mandate and the package of measures [signed in Minsk]. I confirm my adherence to ensuring the immediate and unrestricted access of the special monitoring mission to the entire territory of Donetsk Oblast and Lugansk Oblast,” stated the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office's special representative in the trilateral contact group on Ukraine.

Martin Sajdik went on saying that on 1 June the trilateral contact group discussed the latest surge of violence in Ukraine's east with representatives of the self-declared people's republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.

Asked whether the possible deployment of an OSCE police mission in Ukraine had been discussed by the contact group, Martin Sajdik said it had not.
