Prime minister reviews Danish bacon production project in Grodno Oblast

SLONIM DISTRICT, 9 June (BelTA) – The production of Danish bacon is supposed to begin in Slonim District by the end of the year. Prime Minister of Belarus Andrei Kobyakov was made familiar with progress in IOOO BelDan project's implementation on 9 June, BelTA has learned.

After a tour of the enterprise Andrei Kobyakov said: “It is a promising enterprise, an interesting and science-intensive project in the area of pork production where some say nothing new can be introduced. Grodno Oblast manages to hit pork production targets partially thanks to such innovative projects.”

The investment project to set up an agricultural enterprise to produce grain and 6,000 tonnes of Danish bacon per annum in live weight terms is being implemented near the village of Shigany, Slonim District, Grodno Oblast. IOOO BelDan Deputy Director for Development Nikolai Govorko said: “The enterprise includes 5,000ha of farmland where we grow fodder, a machine and tractor depot, a warehouse to store 20,000 tonnes of grain and a grain-drying facility, a proprietary plant to make combination fodder, a reproducing farm, and a fattening farm. The herd is getting ready now. We intend to bring pedigree pigs here on 20 June and get the facility up and running. We will get the first merchandise by the end of the year.”

The company has built enclosed-type farms with technologies able to protect animals against a possible viral outbreak in the surrounding area. The enterprise is supposed to produce first-class lean bacon. The pigs have been bred out of three varieties — Yorkshire, Landrace, and Duroc. There are plans to sell bacon domestically and export it to Russia, China, and other countries.

Andrei Kobyakov was informed about the implementation of the pork production program in Grodno Oblast. This year's output of agricultural enterprises of all kinds is expected to reach 117,500 tonnes of pork. The figure is supposed to reach 124,000 tonnes in 2020. These figures will be reached once the facilities commissioned in 2015-2016 reach their designed output capacity and after OOO Biocom and IOOO BelDan have implemented their project. Low-performance farms in Grodno Oblast are being optimized or shut down.
