Sabalenka reaches Brisbane final

MINSK, 4 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number one Aryna Sabalenka won over Russia’s No.16 Mirra Andreeva, 6-3, 6-2, to return to the Brisbane International final, BelTA has learned.

Aryna Sabalenka will face No.107 Polina Kudermetova of Russia, who defeated Ukraine’s World No. 55 Angelina Kalinina, 6-4, 6-3, in the semifinal.

En route to the final, the Belarusian notched wins over Mexico’s No.75 Renata Zarazua, 6-4, 6-0, Kazakhstan’s No.29 Yulia Putintseva, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, No.44 Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-4. Marie Bouzkova saw off Belarus’ world number 20 Victoria Azarenka, 6-4, 6-4, in the third round.

Last year Aryna Sabalenka reached the Brisbane final, finishing runner-up to Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, 0-6, 3-6. Victoria Azarenka reached the semifinal where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka, 2-6, 4-6. The ongoing event will be over on 5 January.

Brisbane International is held before the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, the Australian Open, which will take place in Melbourne on 12-26 January. Aryna Sabalenka won the two previous Australian Open editions. Victoria Azarenka won it in 2012 and 2013.
