MINSK 31 January (BelTA) – Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka was unable to secure her third title at the season’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, BelTA has learned.

In a three-set final on 31 January, world number one Aryna Sabalenka was defeated by fifth-ranked Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6. The match lasted two hours and twenty minutes. With this victory, Rybakina secured her second career Grand Slam title, having previously triumphed at Wimbledon in 2022.

For Sabalenka, this was her fourth Australian Open final. She defeated Rybakina in a three-set final in 2023, beat China’s Qinwen Zheng in 2024, and lost the title to American tennis player Madison Keys a year ago. The 27-year-old Sabalenka now has four Grand Slam victories to her name. In addition to her Melbourne triumphs, she has also won the US Open twice (2024, 2025). She holds a total of 22 WTA tournament titles.

The men’s tournament final will be held tomorrow, where world number one Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz will face Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
