Sabalenka wins third Madrid title

MINSK, 3 May (BelTA) - Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka became the winner of the WTA-1000 Mutua Madrid Open for the third time, BelTA learned.

On 3 May in the final the world No.1 overcame American Coco Gauff 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

In the first set, the Belarusian was in complete control of the game: with two aces, breaks in the third and fifth games, and only one double fault. In the second set, the American regained her composure and was leading 5-3, but Sabalenka found the strength to forge ahead and snatch victory in the tie-break. The match lasted 1 hour and 40 minutes. 

On her way to the final Aryna Sabalenka defeated Russia’s Anna Blinkova (76), 6-3, 6-4, Belgium’s Elise Mertens (28) 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, Peyton Stearns (44) of the United States, 6-2, 6-4, and saw off Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk (36) 7-6, 7-6 and Elina Svitolina (17) 6-3, 7-5.

It is a third title in the Spanish capital for Sabalenka, who lifted the trophy in 2021 and 2023 before losing to Iga Swiatek 12 months ago. With the Madrid win the Belarusian collected her milestone 20th career WTA singles title.
