MINSK, 3 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka reached the Brisbane quarterfinal after outlasting world number 29 Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, BelTA has learned.
In the quarterfinal the Belarusian will face world number 44 Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic who defeated Belarus’ world number 20 Victoria Azarenka, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of Last 16.
In the second round Aryna Sabalenka saw off Mexico’s world number 75 Renata Zarazua, 6-4, 6-0, while Victoria Azarenka overcame Australia’s world number 116 Maya Joint, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4.
Last year Aryna Sabalenka reached the Brisbane final where she lost to Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, 0-6, 3-6. Victoria Azarenka reached the semifinal where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka, 2-6, 4-6. The ongoing event will be over on 5 January.
Brisbane International is held just before the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, the Australian Open, which will be held in Melbourne on 12-26 January. Aryna Sabalenka won the Australian Open the two previous editions. Victoria Azarenka won it in 2012 and 2013.
