MINSK, 3 August (BelTA) – President of the National Olympic Committee of Belarus Viktor Lukashenko has congratulated the rower Yauheni Zalaty on winning a medal at the 33rd Summer Olympic Games in Paris, the NOC press service told BelTA.

Today Yauheni Zalaty came in second in the men’s single sculls final, trailing only German Oliver Zeidler. This Olympic medal became the first one for the Belarusian rowing team in the last 16 years.

“Dear Yauheni! You’ve snatched this medal in a beautiful and tense struggle, beating many of the strongest rivals by decisive fractions of a second and demonstrating that today you are one of the world’s best. The entire country cheered for you. You demonstrated an unbending character and managed to gift the Olympic medal to Belarusian fans, to the coaching staff and, of course, to your family! I am sure that together we can overcome any circumstances and withstand any pressure and moral pressure with dignity. May the name of the Belarusian rowing sport sound loud in the international arena again and again,” the congratulation sent by the NOC president reads.

The Belarusian rower Tatsiana Klimovich finished the Games eighth among women. The gold medal went to Karolien Florijn of Netherlands.
