Belarusian wrestlers start their Yarygin Cup run in Russia

MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) – Belarusian wrestlers are taking part in the Ivan Yarygin Cup, an international freestyle wrestling tournament now on in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk, BelTA has learned.

Competitors from more than 20 countries have registered for the event, including world champions and medalists. Day one of the Yarygin Cup featured preliminaries and semifinals across four weight categories in women’s wrestling and three weight categories in men’s freestyle wrestling. Natallia Varakina (50kg) and Kseniya Tsiarenia (65kg) booked their spots in the finals, with each Belarusian scoring three wins against Russian competitors.

Natallia Varakina will face the reigning world champion from North Korea, Won Myong-gyong, in the final on 30 January, while Kseniya Tsiarenia will compete for gold against Russia’s Khanum Velieva. A total of eight athletes from Belarus took to the mat in Krasnoyarsk on 29 January. Sviatlana Katenka (50 kg) and Aryan Tsiutryn (57kg) reached the bronze medal bouts, while Marta Hetmanava (-59kg), Dzimchyk Batamunkuyeu (57kg), Dzmitry Shamela (61kg), and Anatoli Hramyka (70kg) ended their competition in the early stages.

The Ivan Yarygin Cup will continue until 1 February, with a total of 20 sets of medals to be awarded (10 each for men and women). In the upcoming days of the international tournament, the following Belarusians will compete: Nikita Dmitrijevs Mayeuski (74kg), Yaraslau Iadkouski (92kg), Dzianis Khramiankou (125kg), Viktoriya Padeiko (53kg), Darya Ilyasevich and Yana Kastunova (both 57kg), Veranika Ivanova, Yana Tretiak, Karyna Fishchuk (all 62kg), and Anastasiya Zimiankova (76kg).
