Belarusian athletes arriving at Olympic villages, as training commences

MINSK, 6 February (BelTA) – Head of the Belarusian delegation at the Winter Olympics 2026 Vasily Yurchik shared his first impressions about Italy, BelTA reports citing the press service of the National Olympic Committee (NOC).

The first Belarusian athlete to compete at the Olympic Games in Italy will be cross-country skier Hanna Karaliova, with the women’s skiathlon beginning on 7 February at 3:00 PM. The athlete and her coaches are staying in Tesero, approximately 400 km east of Milan, in a cottage located near the local Olympic Village. Also on 7 February, speed skater Maryna Zuyeva will compete in the 3000m event at Milan’s speed skating oval.
“All organizational matters have already been resolved. Our team members are arriving at the Olympic Village, and training has begun. Everyone is ready to compete,” said Vasily Yurchik. “I would like to note that the Italians have prepared very well for the Games. Our coaches and athletes are satisfied with the conditions. Unlike previous Olympics, there have been almost no complaints from delegations. This is largely because the new complex was built specifically for these major competitions. The village is quite compact. It will later be converted into a student campus, so the Olympic legacy will be passed on to all the young Italians who will study in Milan.”

The opening ceremony will begin tonight at 10:00 PM Minsk time. A total of 2,900 athletes from 94 countries will participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics, including seven Belarusians. During 16 days of the competitions, athletes will vie for medals in 116 events across 16 sports.
