MINSK, 31 October (BelTA) – Belarusian weightlifter Artur Yakushau has won the first medal for the Belarusian team at the European Junior and U23 Weightlifting Championships in Albania, BelTA has learned.
The athlete clinched a medal in the men’s 71kg junior (U20) category. His best snatch was 131kg. In the clean and jerk, Yakushau successfully lifted 163kg and 167kg before failing at 171kg. However, the 167kg lift was enough to secure him the small bronze in the event.
Yakushau fell just two kilograms short of a top-three finish in the total, which was claimed by Türkiye’s Engin Kara (298kg vs 300kg). His brother Raman Yakushau placed sixth with a total of 290kg (130+160). Armenian weightlifters sealed the top two spots, with Tigran Karapetyan taking gold (321kg) and Narek Grigoryan the silver (318kg).
The day before, Belarusian Raman Hlukhouski (U20) finished ninth in the 65kg category, Volha Halynskaya (U20) was seventh in the women’s 58kg category, and Viktoryia Hnap placed tenth in the same weight class. The tournament has brought together more than 400 young weightlifters from 42 countries. The Belarusian team is represented by 22 athletes. The competitions in Albania will last until 4 November.
