MINSK, 19 August (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 240 Kristina Dmitruk has made a strong start in the US Open qualifiers, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian secured a straight-set victory, 7-5, 6-4, against Slovenia's Kaja Juvan (World No.166) in the opening round. Kristina Dmitruk will next face world number 164 Dominika Salkova of the Czech Republic in the second qualifying round.

Later today, another Belarusian player, Iryna Shymanovich (World No.176), will begin her qualifying campaign against Austria's Sinja Kraus (No.131). Players must win three qualifying matches to reach the main draw.

The US Open main draw runs from 24 August through 7 September in New York, featuring a record $90 million prize pool. This year's singles champions will each earn $5 million. Last year, Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka won the women's title with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Jessica Pegula of the USA, while Italy's Jannik Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz of the USA, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in the men's final.
