MINSK, 19 November (BelTA) – A total of 65 Belarusian athletes have fulfilled the Olympic qualification requirements in 13 sports, 53 disciplines thus winning the right to compete at the 2020 Games, Belarus Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk said as he spoke at the NOC meeting, BelTA has learned.
This figure is not final, even though the Olympic standards in many sports have been significantly toughened compared to the previous Games, including in those disciplines where Belarus has traditionally performed well, the minister said.
Sergei Kovalchuk is sure that Belarusian athletes have every chance to win more Tokyo 2020 Olympics places. First of all, hopes are placed on trampoline gymnastics as the World Championships open in Tokyo on 28 November.
In 2020 Belarusian athletes will continue to compete to qualify for the Olympic Games. Some of the berths for the games will be distributed taking into account the position of athletes in the world rankings. Thus, Belarus plans to win 100-120 berths for the upcoming games in Japan.
