Volfovich: Despite Belarus' peace initiatives, the level of military threats around the country is growing

ORSHA, 27 August (BelTA) - Despite Belarus' peace initiatives, the level of military threats around our country is only increasing, State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus Aleksandr Volfovich said during a tour of enterprises in Orsha District, BelTA has learned.

“We see military conflicts flaring up in various corners of the world. The 21st century is saturated with such unfortunate events. The situation developing around our country is no exception. Belarus is located in the center of the European continent. Therefore, all the processes happening in the world today also affect our country. We see, unfortunately, that the level of military threats around our country is only growing, despite the peace initiatives, the peaceful proposals that come from the head of state, that originate from the Republic of Belarus, but, unfortunately, hang in the air and remain unanswered by our European neighbors. Destructive rhetoric against our country is also increasing today. We see only some unfriendly steps from our European neighbors towards our country. We are accused of posing a threat to the European continent, as ridiculous as that may sound,” Aleksandr Volfovich said.

In his words, Belarus does not prioritize issues of militarization or increasing the size of its Armed Forces. “We see how the armed forces of Poland and the Baltic states are arming themselves, what kind of rhetoric is directed at us from their side. Attempts to destabilize the situation in the country, orchestrated again by Western curators through our self-exiled opposition, do not cease,” the state secretary said.

The State Secretariat of the Security Council has been tasked with monitoring the fulfillment of objectives related to the supply of new models of weaponry to the Armed Forces and other military organizations of our state. “The purpose of my visit today is to see how the situation is developing at one of the enterprises within the system of the State Authority for Military Industry,” Aleksandr Volfovich added. He noted that in a short period of time, the enterprise has made significant strides forward. Production has been completely restructured and is now equipped with modern machinery.

“We do not have the opportunity to buy American or Western European weaponry because, firstly, it is expensive, and secondly, no one will sell it to us. And to protect our national interests, we need our own models of weapons and military equipment,” the state secretary emphasized.

He also recalled that last week a meeting was held where key issues related to missile development were reported to the head of state. “This is an entirely new industry for our country. In just five years, we have built production from the ground up, trained our own specialists who understand what missiles are, how to build and assemble them, and which path to take. And, of course, the president was interested in what directions we foresee. The leadership of the State Authority for Military Industry and the Defense Ministry reported on the development prospects for this field and for the Armed Forces. The president has set tasks that we will implement,” Aleksandr Volfovich added.

The state secretary of the Security Council pointed out that missile production is not the most important thing. “There are many other new developments in the military-industrial system. They are related to the production of ammunition, which our country previously did not engage in. We have mastered the production of ammunition for artillery systems, multiple launch rocket systems, and have established the production of ammunition for our own Armed Forces. This is also an export commodity that, unfortunately, is in demand today. Therefore, in addition to agricultural machinery and civilian equipment, which our country has always specialized in, we will also sell and earn money from types of military products,” he emphasized.

Belarus has made significant strides in developing the assembly of small arms and has accomplished much in the development of electronic warfare systems, optical devices, and other equipment. “Missiles, robots, aircraft - all of this is important. But the most crucial element on the battlefield today remains the human, the soldier, who carries out the task. He must be protected and armed. The Republic of Belarus is predominantly forested and marshy terrain. Taking this into account, we are focusing on the development of our own models of weapons, military equipment, and personal protective gear for personnel,” Aleksandr Volfovich said.

He once again drew attention to the fact that all of this is being done not to threaten neighbors, but to protect national interests and the country's territory. “We always address our neighbors with peaceful initiatives: let's build a dialogue, sit down at the negotiating table, establish constructive interaction on all issues, and not create problems. For example, today, due to the fault of the European Union, primarily Poland and the Baltic states, there are huge queues at the borders, which cause problems primarily for the citizens of European states who come to Belarus for tourism, medical treatment, and other purposes. But, unfortunately, all our overtures to our neighbors remain unanswered,” the state secretary said.
