"On Point"
MINSK, 30 May (BelTA) – European leaders, like the previous US administration, have staked their political future on the Ukraine conflict, therefore they are not ready for a peace deal with Russia, Mark Episkopos, a research fellow in the Quincy Institute’s Eurasia Program, said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
“The previous US administration has invested all its political capital into the Ukraine conflict. Now many European leaders are doing the same. And I think it will not be easy to persuade them [to reach a peace deal with Russia],” Mark Episkopos said.
The expert cited the West’s policy of sanctions as an example. He expressed confidence that it would be quite difficult to lift these sanctions without the involvement of the European Union. “That is why I believe that intensive discussions are needed between Washington and Brussels, Washington and European leaders in order to develop some joint position. Western countries need to come up with a constructive and realistic joint approach,” he stressed.
According to Mark Episkopos, the USA and the EU currently do not have a shared vision of the path to peace in Ukraine. “Of course, some progress has been made, but it is very slow. We should not expect easy or quick results,” the expert added.
