MINSK, 13 November (BelTA) - Western politicians are rewriting history and distorting facts, and our task is to tell the truth, Anatoly Markevich, head of the representative office of the Permanent Committee of the Union State of Belarus and Russia in Minsk, told the media before the start of the third Union State Forum “Russia and Belarus: Shared History, Shared Destiny,” BelTA has learned.
He emphasized that the discussions will concentrate on ways of preserving the historical memory and countering the falsification of history. “These issues are extremely relevant for modern society. Why? Every day we face threats, challenges, false narratives of history, and attempts to rewrite it. We see how the West has treated the memory: monuments are being torn down, Soviet symbols are being banned, and the meaning of the sacred Victory Day for us is being distorted. “The forum will talk about the true meaning of the events of the Second World War, and emphasize the role of of the Red Army. It was solely thanks to Soviet soldiers that the entire world community was cleansed of the fascist plague,” Anatoly Markevich noted.

The Permanent Committee of the Union State places great importance on all events held across the two countries. "Over the past 25 years, more than 635 events have been conducted with total funding of approximately RUB25 billion. “A very important focus is the perpetuation of memory and the upkeep of memorial sites and memorial complexes. The restoration and reconstruction of Brest Fortress is funded annually," the expert said.
A special area of work is the Union State Library. “We do a lot of work in publishing. We release excellent books about history, our symbols, and those who have glorified and continue to glorify Belarus and Russia on the world stage,” Anatoly Markevich added.
