State Border Committee: Poland officially notifies Belarus of border closure

MINSK, 11 September (BelTA) – The State Border Committee of Belarus has received an official notification from Poland regarding the closure of border checkpoints, official representative of the State Border Committee Anton Bychkovsky told the media, BelTA has learned.

“Today, the State Border Committee of the Republic of Belarus received an official notification from the Border Guard of the Republic of Poland about the closure of the remaining operational international checkpoints on the Belarusian-Polish border from 1am on 12 September, Belarusian time. These are the road checkpoints Brest-Terespol and Kozlovichi-Kukuryki, as well as four railway checkpoints: Grodno-Kuźnica Białostocka, Berestovitsa-Zubki Białostockie, Svisloch-Siemianówka, and Brest-Terespol,” said Anton Bychkovsky.

In his words, Poland is carrying out these actions under the pretext of the need to ensure public security, citing a corresponding clause in the agreement between the governments of Belarus and Poland on border crossings. Poland has pledged to inform [Belarus] of the timeframe for resuming the operation of the checkpoints at a later date.

“Belarusian border guards are currently taking all possible measures to promptly process the citizens in queues before the border is closed by the Polish side,” Anton Bychkovsky emphasized.
