MINSK, 14 November (BelTA) – An international conference “The Great Patriotic War in the Collective Memory of CIS Nations: To mark the 80th Anniversary of Victory” is scheduled to take place in St. Petersburg at the headquarters of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly (IPA) in early December, Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia and Chairwoman of the CIS IPA Council Valentina Matviyenko said at the 59th plenary session of the CIS IPA, BelTA has learned.
Valentina Matviyenko noted that in July 2024 the CIS IPA Council approved a plan of events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory, which is being successfully implemented. “A year ago, the CIS IPA Council adopted an appeal in which parliamentary leaders urged the states of the world, international organizations, and the global community to regard the celebration of Victory as an important historical moment to foster mutual understanding and cooperation in international relations, support the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and promote parliamentary diplomacy,” she said.
A unified position of parliamentarians regarding the feat of the Soviet people was also voiced at the session of the CIS IPA to mark the Victory anniversary earlier this spring. Participants, members of the CIS IPA Council, highlighted the significant role played by each country in the struggle against Nazism and stressed the importance of preserving the sacred memory of those events and the generation of victors.
Valentina Matviyenko added that as part of the commemorative program, heads of parliaments and leaders of several partner international organizations laid wreaths and flowers at the Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery. Video messages from CIS IPA Council members were prepared for veterans of the Great Patriotic War and home-front workers living in CIS countries. Throughout the anniversary year, IPA delegations visited military memorial sites dedicated to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War across the CIS member states.
Representatives of the CIS IPA participated in events held under national programs. During meetings of the IPA sectoral commissions, members of parliamentary delegations met with representatives of search teams. Exhibitions “Doctors of Victory” and “The Role of the Peoples of the USSR in the Great Victory” were opened at the Tauride Palace.
Valentina Matviyenko noted that the annual international cultural and educational forum Children of the Commonwealth and the 25th session of the CIS Youth IPA, both held in Belarus, were dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory. She expressed gratitude to the Belarusian side for the excellent organization of these events.
“The results of all these activities will be summed up at the international conference ‘The Great Patriotic War in the Collective Memory of CIS Nations: To mark the 80th Anniversary of Victory,’ which will take place at the CIS IPA headquarters in early December,” she emphasized.
The session was attended by a parliamentary delegation from the Republic of Belarus, led by Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova.
