Speaker sets tasks for Belarus’ new parliament

MINSK, 22 March (BelTA) - Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus of the eighth convocation Igor Sergeyenko has outlined the tasks for the newly elected parliament on 22 March, BelTA has learned.

“What primary tasks do I see at this stage? The first is to embark on our main, key function which is lawmaking, to ensure consistency and continuity of the lawmaking process, the quality of the adopted laws. The second one is to maintain constructive interaction with the government, the Council of the Republic, the Belarus President Administration, state administration bodies. The third one is to continue the work started during the election campaign to study public opinion and problems of voters, to improve the practice of constructive cooperation with local executive authorities,” Igor Sergeyenko said. “I count on the support of the chairpersons of oblast executive committees and Minsk City Hall who are present in this hall today. Yesterday the president set clear tasks for the parliament and local authorities, which is to respond promptly and decisively to high-profile issues in the regions, to control the situation and influence it.”

Parliament is a serious platform for constructive discussions, Igor Sergeyenko said. “In this regard, I will outline my approach: if you criticize something, make proposals. I expect that optimal decisions in lawmaking will be made during sessions,” he emphasized. “MPs will continue and improve the practice of outreach activities in the regions. In this regard, we will have to strengthen the information and analytical activity of the House of Representatives. Without it, there is no point in talking about the quality and completeness of the decisions taken.”
