BREST, 21 June (BelTA) - Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko suggested supporting the development of a new Union State project for 2028-2030 to continue work at the Brest Fortress. The initiative was announced during the 70th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia on 21 June, BelTA has learned.
According to the speaker, this year marks the completion of the Union State project “Major repairs, restoration, reconstruction, and museumification of the structures of the Brest Fortress at the Brest Hero Fortress memorial complex”.
“Given the significance and scale of this historical site, I suggest supporting the development of a new Union State project for 2028-2030 to continue work on the memorial complex,” said Igor Sergeyenko. According to him, this will contribute to the preservation of cultural and historical memory, the patriotic education of young people, and the enhancement of the Union State’s tourism potential.
Given the strategic partnership between Belarus and Russia, trade and economic cooperation still deserve the closest attention, the first deputy chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly noted. “We are seeing successful growth in mutual trade between Belarus and Russia. Over the past five years, this figure has increased almost 1.4 times. And the first four months of 2026 continue to show positive dynamics in bilateral trade,” he noted, emphasizing that there is no room for complacency.
The chairman of the House of Representatives also noted that parliamentary elections are planned in the Russian Federation this autumn. Belarusian MPs, as part of CIS and SCO missions, will take part in their observation. Igor Sergeyenko pointed out the need to promptly form a monitoring group of the Parliamentary Assembly and assured that the elections would be supported and objectively assessed.
According to the speaker, the work of the Parliamentary Assembly is of particular importance amid ongoing external pressure and the proxy war being waged against Belarus and Russia.
Igor Sergeyenko noted that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the signing of the agreement on the Parliamentary Assembly of the Community of Russia and Belarus. Thanks to the leaders of the two countries, Minsk and Moscow have achieved significant progress in integration.
The 70th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia is part of the program of the Great Heritage, Shared Future forum which is taking place in Brest. Igor Sergeyenko expressed his conviction that the forum will continue to attract new participants and become an effective platform for developing consolidated positions and effective solutions to protect the historical memory of the events of the Great Patriotic War.
