POLOTSK, 5 June (BelTA) - The spiritual unity between the peoples of Belarus and Russia remains strong even during challenging times, Belarusian Commissioner for Religions and Nationalities Aleksandr Rumak said as he attended events to mark the 900th anniversary of the founding of St. Euphrosyne Convent, BelTA has learned.
Aleksandr Rumak stressed the significance of this celebration for the entire Orthodox world. “This is one of the oldest convents in the Russian Orthodox Church. It serves as a symbol for all Orthodox believers. Polotsk was the place where the cradle of Belarusian statehood was formed and where the spiritual essence of the Belarusian people resides. Today's celebration is important for the entire Belarusian nation and for all those who live in our multi-confessional and multi-ethnic country,” he stated.
He recalled that Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, bringing honor to Belarus.
"A while ago, during a meeting with leaders of major religious denominations and organizations, the Belarusian head of state proposed setting up the spiritual centers of our country. This convent in Polotsk, along with the Holy Dormition Monastery in Zhirovichi, serves as a spiritual attraction for all people because visiting these places connects them to our history," Aleksandr Rumak stressed.
He added that Saint Euphrosyne was a beacon of education, contributing to the development of literacy. The visit of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia to celebrate the convent’s anniversary holds great significance. "This once again confirms the spiritual unity between the Belarusian and Russian peoples, their fraternal bond that remains strong even in difficult times. These places bring us together: they are the spiritual foundation for both our nations," Aleksandr Rumak emphasized.
