Pollutant emissions decreasing in Belarus

MINSK, 25 August (BelTA) – Belarus is seeing a reduction in pollutant emissions into the air, Yelena Meleshkova, Deputy Head of Environmental Policy, Science and Information Department at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection said during a press conference, BelTA learned.

Belarus prioritizes minimizing industrial environmental damage by reducing emissions of pollutants into the air and discharges of wastewater, by diminishing single-use plastic consumption and developing clean production. “Green approaches help address the issue of pollutant emissions into the air, and between 2021 and 2024, a clear downward trend has been observed, with only minor changes. Belarus remains a party to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement, fulfilling obligations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In September 2021, our country, as a party to the Paris Agreement, adopted a nationally determined contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which aims to reduce emissions by 35% by 2030 (compared to the 1990 level). The country is implementing strategies for adapting Belarusian agriculture and forestry to climate change until 2050, and national action plans for adapting these sectors to climate change until 2030,” Yelena Meleshkova said.

According to her, air monitoring conducted in 2024 in 23 industrial towns of Belarus, including oblast capitals, allows concluding that the overall picture of air condition is quite favorable. The air condition in our country was assessed mainly as good, very good, and moderate.

“Belarus has rich water resources: 20,000 watercourses, over 10,000 lakes, 85 reservoirs, and 1,500 ponds. The results of 2024 surface water monitoring and the analysis of long-term observation series indicate the stability of surface water conditions in our country,” Yelena Meleshkova noted.
