Police foil planned terrorist attacks in Minsk

MINSK, 3 October (BelTA) - The Belarusian law enforcement agencies did a good job preventing terrorist attacks planned to be committed in Minsk at the end of 2023, ONT TV channel said.

A screenshot of the places chosen for terrorist attacks was shown during the TV broadcast. Among the sites were the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Belarusian National Technical University, the railway station and the Dana Mall and Galleria shopping malls. The options included the Palazzo, Zamok and Arena City shopping malls and the connection from the Kupalovskaya to Oktyabrskaya metro stations. The screenshot also revealed a list of necessary components, including clockwork movements.

The terrorist attack was planned to be carried out in November-December 2023. The person accused of terror plots is a young man described as a mentally unstable and aggressive loner, with no friends, hobbies or work.

A former student launched an attack on his school in Kazan on 11 May 2021. The young person from Belarus became his direct imitator. Initially, the young man's plan included shootings and explosions in schools and kindergartens. Further he scaled up his plan to cover places of mass gatherings.

The expert examination established that the improvised explosive device, assembled using the instructions on the internet, was ready for use. The man compiled a detailed list of his step-by-step actions: what time he is to leave home, what he needs to take with him, how to carry weapons unnoticed and so on. This is a usual pattern of behavior for mentally-disturbed individuals. Now he is undergoing treatment in a psychiatric hospital.
