"On Point"
MINSK, 20 May (BelTA) – US President Donald Trump is first of all a businessman, thus the financial aspect of the Ukraine conflict plays an important role for him, Russian military observer of the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper, retired colonel Viktor Baranets said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Commenting on the recent talks between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul, Viktor Baranets noted that Kiev did not look genuinely interested in achieving peace. “Zelensky's willingness to negotiate looks fake. He has fallen in love with this word, and we will respond in the same fashion. Nevertheless, even such negotiations have produced some results. Even if Kiev is not ready for anything, it also has some consequences. Every day Russia takes several villages in Ukraine. If this pause continues, Zelensky should be prepared for territorial losses,” said Viktor Baranets.
The position of US President Donald Trump will also play a role. The military observer called him a proponent of cowboy diplomacy. “He is akin to a brash Joe who rides a horse and who wants to have everyone under his sway, otherwise he will shoot everyone. Remember, he said that Putin would be in trouble if he didn't comply with American demands. Putin didn't bow to these demands, and Trump backed down. The Kremlin presses ahead using iron logic, not pushiness,” he emphasized.
That said, Donald Trump's actions sometimes play into Moscow's hands, Viktor Baranets said. Despite the statements about peace, the US leader keeps supplying weapons to Ukraine. “We will pay heed only to those proposals of Trump that are aligned with our interests. We appreciate Trump's efforts to calm down the Russia-Ukraine armed conflict. No significant results have been achieved yet, but it's good that he keeps tabs on it,” the military observer said.
