Opinion: Belarusian people will have the final say on constitutional amendments

MINSK, 25 January (BelTA) – Belarusian people will have the final say on whether or not the amendments to the Constitution will be adopted, member of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Oleg Dyachenko told BelTA.

“The nationwide referendum on amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus should become one of the cornerstone social and political events in 2022,” he said.

The senator emphasized that the provisions on social support in the Constitution draft were of particular interest to people. “Support for families, veterans, the disabled and the elderly, measures to preserve cultural and spiritual traditions and to protect state symbols and national heritage, support for the younger generation – this is what Belarusians care about the most. Thanks to initiatives put forward by the public, the system of government will be improved, additional opportunities will be created to make the political system more stable. Other important provisions include amendments that will help thwart attempts to rewrite the heroic past of the Belarusian people, including the history of the Great Patriotic War,” he added.

According to Oleg Dyachenko, people clearly understand that this is being done in their interests and they will anyway have the final say in this matter.
