MFA: EU’s decision to impose tariffs on grain from Belarus, Russia will affect global food security

MINSK, 30 May (BelTA) - The decision by the Council of the European Union to impose protective customs duties on grain from Belarus and Russia will deal a blow to world food security, press secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anatoly Glaz told reporters, BelTA has learned.

The decision by European politicians raises questions about its rationality but is not surprising. Citizens of the European Union will appreciate it, especially in the run up to the elections to the European Parliament. If food prices rise, ordinary farmers, entrepreneurs and other taxpayers will feel a number of negative consequences. The world food security, food supplies for the poorest countries will also be affected by this decision of the EU Council," Anatoly Glaz noted.

According to him, this decision by the EU Council is also an obvious violation by the European Union of the common rules of international trade and WTO rules.

"In any case, Belarus and Russia, I am sure, will survive this. Our countries not only ensure their own food security but also have a responsible attitude towards global food security. We already talked about retaliatory measures to these steps in a recent commentary by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ," the press secretary noted.
