Matviyenko: Belarus and Russia continue to jointly defend historical truth

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, 27 June (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia continue to defend historical truth shoulder to shoulder, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matviyenko said at the plenary session of the 12th Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia, BelTA has learned.

“Today, just like 80 years ago, we continue to stand together, shoulder to shoulder, as we defend the truth about our past. The example of our closest neighbors shows what modern historical amnesia leads to. The descendants of those who suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the Red Army in 1945 are trying to challenge us like never before. They are still dreaming of revenge. They destroy monuments to the liberators. They rewrite history books. But they will definitely fail. Our memory is a hundred times stronger than their monstrous lies,” said Valentina Matviyenko.

According to her, patriotism and respect for one's own history should be a cornerstone at the foundation of the Union State amid colossal external challenges. “Today, we see more clearly than before how important it is to talk about the war period, to protect our common truth and instill values in future generations, ensuring they embody all the good things that their predecessors had. It is important that young people of Russia and Belarus understand this well,” Valentina Matvienko emphasized.
