Maslenitsa is one of the oldest and most popular Slavic holidays. It celebrates the imminent end of winter and welcomes the beginning of spring. This year Maslenitsa week is marked on 8-14 March.
Maslenitsa is also known as Butter Week and is celebrated during the last week before Great Lent. Maslenitsa has its traditional activities, like fairs, making pancakes, bonfires and a whole range of other festivities. They culminate in burning of the Maslenitsa Scarecrow. BelTA's archive photos offer a glimpse at Maslenitsa traditions and rituals.
