Lithuanian politician: Sensible people in my country are afraid of the government’s pressure

MINSK, 12 May (BelTA) – There are sensible people in Lithuania but they are afraid of pressure on the part of authorities. The former Lithuanian presidential candidate Eduardas Vaitkus made the relevant statement at a meeting with Chairman of the Belarusian political party Belaya Rus Oleg Romanov, BelTA has learned.

Eduardas Vaitkus agreed with Oleg Romanov that peaceful coexistence is the necessary condition for a decent life of neighboring nations. This is why the Lithuanian politician has expressed a resolute disagreement with actions of Lithuanian authorities, including with regard to Belarus. In his opinion, Lithuanian authorities indulge in blatant interference in affairs of the Belarusian state, which is absolutely unacceptable.

“My task is to prevent Lithuania from becoming a terrorist state. Following the policy, I’ve reached today and do not intend to abandon it because it seems very important for me to demonstrate a personal stance,” Eduardas Vaitkus said.

The former presidential candidate assured that there are sensible people in his country but they are afraid of pressure on the part of the government that has the necessary leverage. “As one TV host said, he would shoot people like me if he could do it without getting punished,” Eduardas Vaitkus mentioned a statement in his address.

Nevertheless, he stressed that some people in Lithuania have become bolder in their statements about actions of Lithuanian authorities. According to the politician, it is a positive thing.

“In Lithuania there are people, who are not indifferent. They care for Lithuania. And a pro-Lithuanian stance, a pro-Lithuanian policy are obviously very unpalatable for the current government. They call a pro-Lithuanian stance a pro-Kremlin stance when they cannot argue their point,” Eduardas Vaitkus concluded.
