Kochanova: Belarus aims to join BRICS, hopes for China’s support

MINSK, 28 May (BelTA) - Belarus seeks to become a full member of BRICS and counts on China's support in this matter, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova said at the first meeting of the High-Level Committee on Cooperation between the Legislative Bodies of the Republic of Belarus and the People's Republic of China at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on 28 May, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus and China cooperate within international and regional organizations. We share the same views on most issues on the international agenda. Belarus firmly supports the one-China principle, supports China in the issues of Xinjiang, Hong Kong, Tibet, Taiwan, as well as within the Non-Aligned Movement on the issue of the South China Sea. We are grateful for China's support of Belarus' accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as a full member. We hope this will happen in July 2024,” Natalya Kochanova said. “We also attach great importance to Belarus joining the BRICS format, an organization that we consider to be one of the most important unifying platforms for global security, sustainable development, and economic cooperation.”

Belarus aims to become a full member of BRICS and counts on China's support in this matter, the speaker emphasized. “Our delegation plans to take part in the BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St. Petersburg in July 2024. We suggest holding a meeting of Belarusian and Chinese MPs on the sidelines of this event,” the speaker added.

The High-Level Committee on Cooperation between the Legislative Bodies of the Republic of Belarus and the People’s Republic of Cina has been established in accordance with the agreement on cooperation between the National Assembly of Belarus and the National People's Congress of China. Its goals are to deepen and strengthen relations between the two states, analyze cooperation between the legislative bodies, and to promote proposals and recommendations on cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries in various areas.
