Karanik: Space is platform for cooperation, technological advances

MINSK, 25 September (BelTA) - Space is a platform for cooperation and technological development, and its militarization is unacceptable, Vladimir Karanik, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences, said at a meeting of the CIS Interstate Council on Space, BelTA has learned.

"Since the 1990s, the capabilities in space exploration and the impact of space technologies on life in our countries and on the real sector of the economy have significantly increased. The task of the Interstate Council is to coordinate efforts to ensure the competitiveness of our countries and the widespread use of the opportunities provided by space. These include communications, meteorology, Earth observation, and ionospheric research. There are quite a few technological areas where we can cooperate. And, most importantly, we must remember why this council was created - to ensure the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes. Therefore, the council must also state its firm position on the non-admittance of the militarization of space. Indeed, space should be a place for cooperation, technological development, a platform where all countries interact to ensure security and new opportunities for life on Earth," Vladimir Karanik said.

He emphasized that Belarus has retained expertise in the space sector since Soviet times. “We are developing it. This includes expertise in the field of Earth remote sensing, ionospheric research, and the creation of new materials for use in space. Furthermore, navigation systems and meteorological equipment require corresponding ground infrastructure. Therefore, one of the topics for discussion is how we can ensure the exchange of information between spacecraft of different countries, the interaction of ground infrastructure, and the development of new, more high-tech spacecraft,” Vladimir Karanik said.
