MOSCOW, 12 July (BelTA) – The establishment of the institution of presidency and the victory of Aleksandr Lukashenko in Belarus' election 30 years ago were momentous events in the history of the country, Chairman of the Commission for Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarus-Russia Union State Igor Lutsky said at a meeting of the commission in Moscow on 10 July, BelTA has learned.

“Today, on 10 July, we are marking the 30th anniversary of the institution of presidency: in 1994, Aleksandr Grigorievich Lukashenko confidently won the presidential run-off election polling more than 80% of the votes and became the first president of the Republic of Belarus. It was a pivotal event in the history of Belarus. The president set a goal to turn Belarus into a welfare state and a country for people. Thanks to this, today we have peace, we live in alliance with the Russian Federation, we support each other,” said Igor Lutsky.

“No one probably believed that we would be able to build a welfare state with well-developed technological sector and healthcare, a state that would send its cosmonaut into space and build a nuclear power plant. Thirty years is an extremely short period for history, but we have achieved a lot thanks to President of the Republic of Belarus Aleksandr Grigoryevich Lukashenko,” Igor Lutsky told reporters after the meeting.

“We still have a lot to do. But the most important thing, as the president said at a ceremonial meeting on 2 July, is that our people have grown into a nation, they have become a monolith. And it is the president who consolidates our society, makes it unified, shapes the future and we are confident that our future will be happy,” emphasized Igor Lutsky.
