Governor: Poland’s border closure hurts ordinary people on both sides

BREST, 15 September (BelTA) – Poland’s border closure primarily affects ordinary people: residents of border areas and tourists, Governor of Belarus’ Brest Oblast Piotr Parkhomchik said in an interview with BelTA.

“Poland’s decision to close all border checkpoints for Brest Oblast, a border area that saw thousands of daily crossings, is a cause for serious concern. First and foremost, ordinary citizens suffer, both from Belarus and other countries. People are deprived of the opportunity to visit relatives and friends, to handle day-to-day issues. But residents of neighboring Polish regions experience exactly the same difficulties, as trips to Belarus were part of their daily life,” Piotr Parkhomchik emphasized.

The real economy is feeling the impact too, with transport and logistics companies forced to find alternative routes, cross-border trade declining, and the tourism sector coming to a standstill. “To address the current circumstances, we have coordinated our services. We are documenting citizen inquiries and losses of enterprises and are helping to identify alternative routes,” the governor said. He stressed that the border should be a line of interaction, not division.

“Our region has always been and remains a territory of dialogue, cooperation, and mutual understanding. Today we are counting on common sense and are ready to work in the interests of our citizens. I hope that the Polish side will also show responsibility and hear those who have already faced difficulties. History shows: the longer the uncertainty persists, the higher the costs are for people and the economy. Therefore, the best solution would be the earliest possible return to the normal, safe, and mutually beneficial operation of the checkpoints,” Piotr Parkhomchik concluded.
