VITEBSK, 5 February (BelTA) - Vibrant and distinctive painted rugs [maliavanka] by acclaimed artists of the past and contemporary masters are showcased at the Art of Light exhibition which opened at the Vitebsk Regional Local History Museum on 3 February, BelTA has learned.
The exhibition project Art of Light invites viewers on a journey into the world of folk imagination, where everyday and folklore motifs harmoniously intertwine. Here, colors seem to come alive on homespun canvas, as if illuminated by the inner light of every artist’s soul. The exhibition presents a unique cross-section of Belarusian naïve art: from recognized masterpieces of the past to contemporary interpretations of this traditional technique.
The core of the exhibition consists of pieces by legendary masters Jazep Drozdovich and Yelena Kish from the Zaslavye collections and the Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve and the Drozdovich Art and Ethnographic Museum. The pieces by these renowned masters have a philosophical depth that sets the tone for the entire exhibition. Their maliavankas combine fantastic motifs with dreams of a paradise garden.
A contemporary perspective on maliavanka is showcased by the Roshva folk studio from Polotsk. Their works create a symphony of color as the artists infuse painted rugs with new themes and innovative approaches in execution.
The exhibition also features items from the collections of the Vitebsk Regional Methodological Center for Folk Art, highlighting the regional characteristics of this applied art. A distinctive touch is added by the works of Anna Osipkova, the only wood carver in Vitebsk Oblast from Chashniki District. Her sculptures create a cozy atmosphere and fill the hall with the warmth of natural materials. After the opening, visitors could try their hand in paper painting and take the paces they created as a keepsake.
The exhibition will be running until 12 March.
