"On Point"
MINSK, 8 November (BelTA) – Nuclear weapons and the Oreshnik system serve as strategic deterrents, allowing Belarus to guarantee its security without placing an excessive burden on the economy, Nikolai Buzin, Member of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“Nuclear weapons and the Oreshnik system serve as strategic deterrents. This has been stated more than once, but since the West constantly neglects this, we have to remind and explain that they will be used if necessary,” Nikolai Buzin said.
The MP noted that Western media and political elites promote the idea that Belarus and Russia will not use the weapons at their disposal to repel a potential aggression: “Frankly, I cannot understand what this is based on. We explain to them in the clearest possible terms under what circumstances this weapon will be used, but it’s like water off a duck’s back.”
Nikolai Buzin stressed that Belarus has no aggressive intentions towards other countries, a point consistently made by the country’s leader. At the same time, Belarus has all the necessary means to ensure its own security, including tactical nuclear weapons. Thus, the state does not need to be drawn into an arms race and spend enormous funds on defense.
“Nuclear weapons are asymmetric means of countering potential adversaries. We are not being drawn into an arms race, we are not allocating 5% of GDP for war, as the United States and Europe are talking today. But we have the means that allow us to ensure national and military security without overstraining our own economy,” the MP believes. “It is important to clarify when we would deploy our arsenal: if an enemy crosses our border or commits any illegal acts against our country.”
